These cars require mor attention than the average car, but will reward you with ownership pleasure beyond what you get with most cars. If you are handy with the tools and are willing to spend time on PM, go for it. If you rely on the dealer to do it for you, you will need deep pockets. I would look for an off lease 2001-2002 model CPO car or one with a bit of warranty left. These can be had for $10-14k USD.
By the end of the run (2002) they had most of the bugs worked out. I have a 1994 SE and an 00 9-3 SE and the 00 9-3 has been far less trouble to date, and the powerband is much more realistic for everyday driving.
AND BEFORE YOU BUY, ALWAYS...ALWAYS, GET THE CAR CHECKED OUT BY A REPUTABLE SAAB MECHANIC.
