The shock passes through a rubber bushing, the car body, then a second bushing. I R&Rd my shocks (1997, 113k mi) and on one one side these were fine, on the other, the upper (inside car) one was slightly damaged from being mis-aligned on installation. There's a tiny lip that fits down into the hole in the body - so the two bushings actually contact each other. On mine the lip was misaligned and over the years I guess the motion ripped it up a little. So I would have been happy if I had a new bushing, but unless they're cheap (I'm guessing not) it's not worth bothering about. I put the old one in, making sure to align what was left of the lip. About 300 mi. so far, and all seems fine.
Oh, and be *sure* to have some kind of waterproofing goo -- I used GE Silicone caulk -- to seal up the works when you put the bushings on. The shock mounts right thru the top of the wheel well, right where water wants to splash.
Other than that, it's a pretty easy DIY job. And you'll feel it....
