Sounds like you pinched the valve cover gasket and the leak is coming out of the break. It's very easy to have the gasket slip without the use of some type of permetex sealant/adhesive. Follow JohnSe advice and use alittle in the corners to hold the gasket in place, let it bond for a few minutes and flip the cover on.
