BOV (turbo bypass valve)

I saw a post by Dean on the 9-3 board about the turbo bypass valve, aka blow-off-valve making noises after boost is increased on a modded engine.
Does it make noise while on boost, or while on bypass?
Has anyone seen this on an un-modified turbo?
1996 SE turbo, 100k, getting some strange sounds from under the hood when I take my foot off the gas and the boost gauge drops back... One long rattling sound followed by two-three short sounds.
I have been suspecting a new crack in the plastic intercooler or IC pipes (all of which are in pretty sad shape after 100k miles and some repairs).
The sound is not like an old-style blow-off valve that vents into the air, more like a cracked trumpet or vibration in a hollow pipe. Happens about the time I think the throttle would close, and the bypass valve open (I think). The vacuum line leading to the valve was replaced a year ago and should be good. I have not tested the valve itself to see if it holds pressure, because the sound happens when it should open, and not while on boost.
