If you are doing a flush and fill, there will be residual water in the system. This can be reduced with a shop vac on the heater core and rad.
Do not premix in this situation. Close the system and add all of the full strength coolant, then fill with distilled water. If you make a mixture, often it will not all go into the engine, then what is there is weak because of residual water.
If the rad, heater core and engine etc are all bone dry, then it could be done either way. But adding straight coolant and letting it mix in the system is easy.
A full gallon of coolant is close enough to the 50:50 mix. But if you want to buy another container of coolant, you can add a bit more to get to the 50:50 mix.
