The steering column could be lose on the cabin attachments, so it is worth taking the driver panel off and checking the connections. There is a TSB about how to adjust the steering column to get rid of some noises (squeaks) find that TSB and you will have a better idea of what you need to check.
General tips taking the area down: 1. Unbolt the fuse assembly COMPLETELY, every single bol you can find. You do NOT need to remove the 2 10mm hexagonal bolts, just the torx. 2. remove the knee brace for added space. That should be about it.
As for the rear, I share you pain. I have a rattle snake like rattle in the back that is driving me insane, is like a spring rattling repeatedly, yet I cannot find what exactly is the cause of the problem. I ordered a special hatchback kit which I will be using as soon as it gets here. Once it does, I will report back as to how it helps the various squeaks, rattlers and hums I got all over the car.
Saab on!!
