I tried putting in a replacement mast a month or so ago, and ended up with a mast that doesn't retract all the way (part of old mast was stuck in housing, couldn't remove it). So now , in addition to the normal sounds of the antenna motor, I get three loud clicks as the motor fights the reduced travel. A pretty sucky fix.
Anyway, my idea for a quick and dirty fix (assuming your mast is in good working order) is to just cut the white plastic toothed cord from the antenna mast, and disconnect the power connector from the motor. The mast could be adjusted manually and should stay in place due to friction, and the reception would be exactly the same. No more whirring sounds whenever you turn on your CD player ...
Does this sound like it would work ?
