The NG900 has a serpentine belt configuration with two idler pulleys. This turned out to be a big pain for some people including me, when one or both pulleys failed and took the belt out. Car disabled/towed, etc...

The 9-3 model has a similar pulley layout, but with only one pulley, the "upper" ribbed one. Bypassing the lower idler pulley makes the NG900 belt more like the 9-3, with the belt about 96-97 inches, instead of 103 inches like the original belt.

So, instead of replacing two idler pulleys when they start going out, you only have to replace one.

The short belt goes straight across from the upper idler to the power steering pulley, instead of down around the lower idler which can then be bypassed or removed.
