the stereotypical ball joint splitter. The boots mount on a metallic lip hidden (not visible) under the boots. The boots are held in place by a spring that wraps around this metal lip. The Fork type ball joint splitter will DESTROY this metal slip. Someone I know did just that :) I wonder how I know? Hmm.... Anyway, if the lip is trashed, we are talking new arms. The easiest way to take the ball joint out is to take the control arms from the car subframe. It sounds MUCH harder than it really is, but if you want to do it right you have to go this way. Alternatively you can remove the output shaft/axle nut and remove the entire strut assembly from the subframe control arms. Either of these options will allow enough room for you to use the correct type of ball joint splitter.
The booties are replaceable. After being a idiot and trashing mine with a fork type ball joint splitter, I had to replace them. I got to say it was not hard, as I originally expected. You have to be creative to make the job easy, but, personally, I did not think much of it. Come to think of it I had such horrible battles with other parts of the suspension, that perhaps the booties seemed easy by comparison.
Keep us updated with your progress, or drop by if you get more questions!
