Eliminating the dinging will not solve the problem. If you are willing to rip the dash apart, consider it an early warning and an opporunity to do a little maintenance on the console to save some serious $$ later. Other symptom is occasionally not being able to turn key when you insert it (my case).
Covered before, but fortunately not common. See link below, or search the 9K board for "lock cylinder", seems more common on those cars.
The wife of an acquaintance had his 9K half-in half out of a parking space at a market when it happened... key would not turn in either direction or come out, kid in a child seat in back, car full of groceries... two guys in the parking lot tried to help with no luck... car towed to the dealer... mechanic turned key with no problem... two weeks later, same thing in the driveway on a cold day (that was a 9K and not a 900, but same kind of lock, I believe) He was lucky, AAA card covered the tow and lock was replaced 3 weeks before warranty expired.
