Basically, I replaced my strut mounts with Scantechs this past fall (for preventative measures) while replacing my struts with Bilsteins HDs. -Hit a nasty pothole 2 months ago and cracked the LH strut mount. -Eeuroparts warrantied the item. After a week of driving with the replacement Scatech mount, and hitting some minor potholes, the replacement mount was already showing signs of cracks (not as severe). Called Eeuroparts and they offered a credit for the difference of an OEM mount. I just installed the OEM last night, but before installing it, I inspected the strut tower. It appears the impact from the the first failed mount had deformed the opening of the tower. The areas between the 3 stud holes had been pushed up atleast an 1/8th to a 1/4 of an inch. With unequal load distribution around teh strut tower, I theorize why the replacement Scantech failed again. The deformation was obvious since the paint was cracked and alot of light could be seen coming through while test fitting the new mount. At this time, I took a small block of wood and forced the tower back into shape and touched up the paint to prevent further corrosion. It wasn't perfect but the load distribution should be close to original, by feel and by sight.
Whats interesting is roads that have not been dug up, seem to be fine - even old pavement. Its the one's that were dug up from the city and patched that are plagued with Potholes. The soil underneath is not as compact as the rest of road, thus sinks, and allows water to seep in, leading to frost heaves, and then, voila - Pot Hole. This is only a theory, but.. hopefully a good one. It really bothers me to see a freshly paved road get dug up. I'm sure they try to plan ahead of time for utility work but... Maine Winter's aren't great for any car.
