1) See post by Dean linked below.
Note part about not throwing parts at the problem.

2) The sensor before the cat is not affected by the converter. It is the sensor AFTER the cat converter that is used to monitor the emissions. Read the following explanation:

3) Cat converters don't just go bad by themselves at 84k miles, if it really has stopped working, there must be a reason. If you really DO need a new one, check into aftermarket cat converters, the oem one is pricey.
