I have a question about timing chain backlash? Noise. I have a 1998 Saab 900SE turbo Automatic with 104,000 miles on the clock. I have had it since it had 50,000 miles. I change the oil every 3000 with Castrol GTX 10-30. I changed my oil today and after I changed it I had my head under the hood and was running the engine with the hood up. I was on the passenger side and revved up the car with the throttle cable to run operating pressure on the oil filter and to check for leaks. As I revved the engine and let it down I heard a backlash noise around the timing chain area. I always have my ear open to chain noise and the car has no noticeable noise at an idle, cold or hot. I repeated the rev up and let it come down and heard the same thing a back lash kind of noise.
My wife got home with her 2003 9-5 and it did not replicate the same noise I was hearing. Is this a problem to hear this backlash kind of noise. I realize that I revved up and then came strait down and everything could be trying to slow down and causing a noise. The belt and pulleys are new and this does sound like a chain backlash noise.
Any advise would be appreciated. The last thing I need right now is this car to go catastrophic failure mode with a stretch and broke chain or a balance shaft derailment. I am about to install a new roof on the house and that hurts enough. I may just be paranoid in a "oh no not now" financial mode due to the house. My wife calls me a car Hypochondriac that hears everything in a car anyway.
Thanks again for anybody’s help in advance.
