Seems likely something happened to one of the hoses in the "evaporative emission control system".

You could follow the visible hoses and connections and look for a crack or a loose hose, but I assume your mechanic would have done that. I would not start pulling the hose connections apart because you could be messing up what you just paid someone to to.

One hose goes from the gas tank into the engine compartment and then into a charcoal canister hidden in the wheel well. Another goes from the canister to the throttle body. This second hose has the purge valve in the middle, which is electrically controlled. As far as I know, it is basically those three parts (two hoses and the canister) not including some odd looking hose clamps and mounting hardware.

The hoses are pretty solid, and each end has a double clamp on the end which does not let go easily. To get to the canister, you have to take the passenger side wheel off, and remove the plastic fender liner to get to it.

I am not sure you can get to the hose end which is at the tank.

I assume you know where the purge valve is, if not, look below the passenger side end of the strut brace, it is under a bracket that looks like a narrow metal ledge...
