One fact if you let the boot go you will wear out and replace the control arm. When I did my struts on my 98SET I had cracked boots also. I removed the old boot, cleaned the old grease out due to dust contamination, and installed the new boot. Boy those retaining rings are tough to get on (see my previous post for procesure) Then I injected the boots with grease with a needle attachment sliding between the ball joint shaft and boot (no puncture of boot). If you do not have play in the joint I would replace the boots as I did to save some money. I would be willing to bet the majority of joint failure is due to the crappy boot material failing and dust eating up the joint.
