I think the "ends" are alternator, battery, fuse box(the 60A fuses near front of the car). BUT: I think the question is about the starter connection which is NEAR the alternator end.
In other words, that cable has three "ends" but FOUR connections.
If I remember correctly, when my battery end corroded, we did not have time to figure out the starter connection, so it was fixed on the cheap, by cutting the end of the cable and fitting a new clamp.
The starter has three connections, power, ground, and a third wire to the starter relay (maybe someone can confirm from the electrical diagram in the Haynes manual, no time to look it up now). So, if the starter positive connection corrodes, it can be very difficult to diagnose because the starter solenoid will work, power at the battery will be normal, but the starter will not have enough power through the corroded connection to turn the engine.
100% correct on the shrink tubing, exposed copper is why it corrodes in the first place.
