Can I do it myself? That's one of the toughest questions to answer over cyber space.
Sure you can, no you can absolutly not.
I have seen and heard countless stories about success from DIY people and I have corrected many head gasket jobs that went bad when someone tried it themself.
Head gasket jobs is in my eyes on the upper scale of DIY jobs and you need to be pretty used to wrenching on your car before tackling this job. Many things can go wrong and you might end up paying someone in the end for correcting the problem.
I think the two biggest pitfalls is that you might not get the cam shaft timing back together correctly when hooking up the timing chain and that you accidently break off the plastic timing chain guide when lifting the cylinder head up and off the engine.
If you break that guide you need to take the front engine cover off to replace.
Another job I do at the same time is to check for leak down of the piston rings just to make sure that nothing has happened on the bottom end of engine. It really sucks if you get the head back on just to discover that the piston rings have taken a beating and you have a rough idle or running.
When checking prices make sure that you understand what they are offering in the price. I bet that the $1300.00 price includes grinding valves and resurface of the head. Still a little bit high though.
But don't stare yourself blind on that the head gasket is only $25.00 to $75.00. It is lots of other gaskets, fluids, thermostat, etc, that a professional shop replace at the same time.
