I'd like to thank everyone here for making Saab maintainance possible. I'm posting this to try to do my part to help others.
My cable clutch developed a stick/slip behavior near the bottom of the pedal stroke. I replace the cable [the old one looked fine] and it got a little better but was even worse within a month. With nothing to lose, I tried lubricating the throwout bearing and fork pivot bushings through the clutch access cover. I first released the cable to allow me to jiggle the pivot manually, then sprayed the 3 spots with brake cleaner, then liberally applied spray lithium grease. No special care was taken except to not spray directly at the clutch plates. About a 10 minute job.
It worked GREAT. A huge improvement. Over the following month it's remained smooth and low-effort. I noticed that the previous posters on this method haven't reported back, so perhaps the effect will go away but if I need to do this every 3-6 months that sure beats clutch replacement.
Hope this helps you.
