My 97 900 SET with 150,000 km recently starting hesitating (misfiring) under load. The problem worsened on hot afternoons. Eventually the CEL came on and registered a generic misfire fault in cylinder no. 4.
After my mechanic check the vacuum lines etc the DI cassette was the obvious culprit. A new unit in Canada is CAD$700-870 after tax (depending on whether you purchase from the dealer or not). I was lucky(?) enough to find a unit secondhand from a newer, much lower mileage car for $200. However, upon intallation the CEL now reports a P0340 (cam position sensor) failure, which is of course an integral part of the DI cassette. I changed the plugs with a fresh set of OEM NGK BCPR7ES.
Am I missing something here? Can the ignition control module give these problems too? Perhaps the moral of the story is don't buy secondhand electonics? Shoot me while I'm down!
