I can chime in here having had a 1993 900S (classic 900) that I drove for 150K, as well as 3 9000's that I drove for nearly 200k. My NG900 is by far the least expensive, most reliable Saab I have owned. That said, it has had it's share of issues, but compared to my previous Saabs it's the easiest to own.
Now as far as character and fun to drive-ness, my old Saabs were better, but give and take I guess.
I think the NG900/9-3 is a great Saab. Most of the major problems center around the front suspension, belt tensioner pulleys, as well as cable clutch and shift linkage on early models. The non-turbo 2.3l engines have sludge problems if they have not had regular oil changes, which can lead to major engine failure....so check your records. Also I would run (don't walk) away from the V6, unless it has had the tensioner updates and has ALL service records.
Hope this helps.
Nick.
