fuel pump woes: stop me from cutting my car?

I have a 95 v6 and a bad fuel pump, and already a couple times I have had to bang on the gas tank to start the car.
I got good advice from this site saying, replace it; it won't heal. Now rather than drop the tank I am considering cutting through the floor under the rear seat. People on this site have done it. I like the idea of having that access hole in case something goes wrong (sensing unit goes akimbo, new part is faulty, etc), then I can get back to it without dropping the tank again. And I plan on just replacing the $100 inner pump, not the whole assembly.
It's just hard to take the plunge and cut that metal.
I think maybe the hole there "for the wires" was meant to be for the pump and GM and SAAB didn't communicate, and so it's off by 6 inches. I feel like I am correcting a bad design.
If anyone has a thought on this I'd appreciate hearing.
cheers,
Schpank
