The lower octane is the same brand as the premium fuel that you had been using? It will burn faster, but that also increases the possibility of knocking if other variables are condusive. You have a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Suggest that you evaluate mid grade fuel.
You should also use Techron Concentrate to clean injectors and clean the combustion chambers to reduce aquired octane demand. Worn plugs are also significant from a knocking point of view.
We have seen a disproportionate number of 2.3NA engines sludge up. So these engines would seem to be intolerant of low grade oil or neglected oil changes. If there is sludge and it gets loosened up with the action of synthetic or perhaps flushing, the mess can plug the oil pickup screen and you then get oil starvation.
Many of the original oil pressure switches have failed. You need to confirm that you can see the low oil pressure warning lamp come on before cranking the engine. If not, you need to replace it as you will be blind to a loss of oil pressure.
I would fish through the oil drain to see if there is any sludge. Better yet, remove the valve cover and inspect. If things are reasonably clean, you can switch to synthetic and going through a semi blend would have little merit. Also suggest that you use a xW40 oil such as M1 5W40. Rotella synthetic from Walmart is a group three oil which is very good and economical. If you R&R the VC, you should have an new VC gasket.
