Mid-interval oil filter change...to do or not to do?

that is the question. I have heard that an oil filter, to a point, becomes more effect the longer it is used. So the mid interval change may not be necessary.
Slight rear main leak, check oil at least once a week, no change in oil level
M1 5W40 change every 5k miles
