Major engine work in denver area?

Hi,
i'm just back from a road trip, colorado to portland and back. 97 900s, 2.3 non turbo, 93k. While on the OR coast, my check engine light came on and the engine lost power. Rumbling real bad. I took the car to the nearest shop, which checked compression and found none in the second cylinder. I think this means that the cylinder no longer works altogether. Also, i had a look with the plug out, and you could see oil everywhere, esp on the plug tip. I found the only import mechanic in a 100mi area, and he said that he'd most likely have to pull the head. He quoted $1600-1700. However, he couldn't start until 10 days later, which was the case with another shop we called in Bend. Long story short, we drove the 1400 miles home with 3 cylinders. Now I need to find a shop that is capable to fix the engine in a reasonable amount of time (going to NH as soon as car is all set). However, I live in gunnison, co, which is ~4 hrs from denver, where all, except for 1 shop in durango, are located. I'm thinking about scandiatek, A&B in ft. collins, and koziol in lakewood. I suppose what I need is some advice on going about getting a high dollar job done at a shop i've never been to more so than specific mechanical. Would a rebuilt/used engine be better? I've been good to this engine, and would hate to loose all the maintanence i've done to it. Please don't suggenst salvaging the car. I like her too much. Thanks a bunch. Ian
