I posted a while back about code P0432. I'm looking for any other ideas before dropping major $$$ on a catalyst. Sorry for the length of the post, but with all the details, maybe somebody can throw me a bone....
'97 900SE V6 w/127000 miles. I have owned for only 1000 of those miles.
Background: Bought it used, ran like a top. No Check Engine light. Took it to a local indie for 125K service and timing belt replacement. Got it back from indie barely running - would not idle without keeping your foot on the gas, felt like it was dropping a cylinder or 2. Check engine light came on 100 ft. out of indie's driveway. Took it back. After 2 days:"We had a couple of vacuum lines switched - should be fine now." Drove it 1 mile - check engine light came on. Took it home as it was after hours. Parked overnight and discovered massive oil leak. Took it back. "Couldn't find any oil leak, reset the computer, all should be fine now." Still leaked, put in a quart of stop-leak as it appeared to be a pan gasket.
Drove it almost 100 miles, then had a massive smoke cloud under the hood. Towed it home. Discovered that indie had crushed PCV hose and AIC hose between intake and rear valve cover when replacing plugs. Air pressure built up under the valve cover and in the oil pan and blew out the valve cover gasket and was causing the pan gasket to weep. Fixed all of this myself. Another 75 miles later, Check engine light came on. Bought a scanner because I am NOT taking it back to butterfingers.
Code is P0432 - Catalyst efficiency low, bank 1 (front). I have replaced both O2 sensors on that bank. I can get 3 or 4 drive cycles before the code comes back. The oil smells like gas after 200 miles, so I'm thinking maybe I have blow-by or a leaky injector in bank 1. Fuel pressure checks out OK with no apparent leakdown. I made sure the firing order was correct, just in case.
Any ideas appreciated.
