Dear Paul,
I can fully understand your dilemma. I am actually also waiting for the NG 9-3. It has been announced in several European magazines to be introduced next year (2001). Although I go for the refined turbo engines and distinctive shape of the current 9-3, my "problems" with the current 9-3 are as follows.
The basis of the platform is more then 10 years old; It stems from the previous generation GM/Opel Vectra/Calibra. This results in:
- The torsion stiffness is typically less than e.g. the 9-5, Volvo S60, etc.
- The safety in frontal crash test is marginal; although improved compared to the NG900
- The car interior is really narrow for a car of this class.
Last but not least, buying now the present 9-3 will make it directly (technically) oldfashened when the new 9-3 comes out. This will also decrease the value of the car.
An advantage of buying the present 9-3 above waiting for the NG 9-3 could be that the present 9-3 is free form "starting deseases", although the 9-5 was also quite failure free at introduction.
So in conclusion, I will see for how long my present 12.5 years old Volvo will last and I will try to go for the NG 9-3.
Kind regards,
Dutchman
