This has never affected the performance of these skis and when I'm done a day on the slopes, there is no rust. Later, if I haven't dried off the edges before comitting them to storage. the rust sets in again.
There's a big difference between (a) metal upon which surface rust sets in, only to be scrubbed off the next day and (b) metal whose surface rust is not subject to any regular friction-rub. The latter gets to live on and deeply. The former is a mere temporary phenomenon. The rate at which the rust progresses is variable, depending on the components in the steel.
Since brakes are by definition a friction device, the working parts of the brakes have small scores in the steel rotors. i.e. they are, under a microscope, rough surfaces and prone to taking up moisture. Hence, slow oxidation is a natural phenomenon for these surfaces.
