The other day I started to pull the driver's door handle (2001 9-3 SE) while the door was locked, then, when I used the console switch to unlock the door, it wouldn't unlock. I tried locking and unlocking several times with no results. What is much worse, I couldn't unlock the door by pulling up on the lock button on the top of the door. I eventually had to use the passenger door to get out of the car, and was able to unlock the door using the key.
The fact that the lock could hang up like that and not respond to the manual button seems like a serious safety hazard. I would think that the lock should be designed so that the manual button is an absolute failsafe to open the door. I can imagine that someone trying to get out of their Saab following an accident, or in any other emergency situation, could easily pull on the door handle with the door locked and get into the same problem I experienced--with more severe consequences.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Are there any recalls or service bulletins regarding lock safety?
