The platinums that were OEM installed in the Viggens are a different plug, and they were crap in real work service. So there was a lot of throwing out the baby with the bath water, as platinum was given a bad reputation without regard to the fact that there are various types of NGK platinum plugs.
The ones that I have are otherwise almost the same as the standard plugs, except for the co$t and the platinum center electrode tip.
For my 95SET, the gap is specified at .039 +/-. .035" is the low side of the spec, so is in spec. And pmr found that .035" worked better in the Viggens with the higher boost. So I changed to .035 last spring when the plugs were 1 year old. Seems to work fine, but I did not notice any change with my vehicle.
Somehow going to the lesser side of the tolerance range and letting the gap erode open form there seems to make some sense as well.
Yes, my higher boost pressure was a motivating thought.
