I was weaned on 2002's and still have a soft spot in my heart (as well as an attic full of parts) for these cars. The Tii was so far ahead of its time if you think back at a car with a great suspension, peppy engine, wonderful handling, etc. as far back as 1968, and at a decent price. What the hell was Detroit smoking back then?
Of course, one could argue that today, BMW has totally lost sight of it's roots in catering to the yuppie market and not even importing strippers over here any more, but that's another long rant.
If you get one, be sure the shock towers in the rear are good. There aren't many left around that aren't rust buckets. Other frailties were weak 2nd gear syncros (though if I bought one today, I'd slap a later model 5 speed tranny into it) The injection systems were pretty good but can be expensive to fix. Manual window cranks break often...other various foibles inherent to 30 year old cars.
Look at the bimmer.org forums for more up to date 2002 nuts and their opinions.
If only they'd have had the galvanizing technologies of today!! I'd be riding in one now.
Good luck finding a good one. It'll be worth the search.
