My 1999 Base 9-3 with automatic and 19,000 miles has been experiencing a shimmy/vibration between 45 and 48 miles per hour. It only vibrates under acceleration, not when coasting.
I took it to the dealer and they are quite concerned about this issue. I am using a loaner 2001 9-5 base while they look into repairs. To me, it seems like a transmission issue. The dealer has not offered an explanation yet.
This is my third SAAB in 15 years (other makes interspersed) and the amount of quality control problems I have had are concerning, to say the least. I have experienced the following issues:
Vibration as described above
Climate temperature knob snapping, which seems like a design flaw
No backing at dead pedal leading to carpet needing replacement due to sill issues and excessive carpet wear
An abundance of rattles
Clicking which sounds like a CV joint problem
Rear washer spray element not working
Dead battery after 17 months (and a low amp alternator, to boot)
Most of these are minor but annoying problems, and seem silly for a $28,000 car marketed as a fine european driving machine.
Thank god SAAB offers loaners. But this quality seems like a serious issue when many other makes offer very well produced machines. My past vehicle, a Nissan Maxima, may have not been quite as 'exotic' or utilitarian, but it was fast, handled reasonably, and was very well detailed and built. Never had a quality control problem during ownership. Other vehicles I have owned, including Honda and Acura were as solid as the Maxima.
I can only hope that SAAB will improve quality and deal with design flaws prior to the final production process, not after vehicles have been put in the hands of customers.
