The problem w/ 17" is mostly...

...bent rims. With 17", there's a lot less tire between the road and the wheel. Now imagine hitting a pothole...you get the idea. People in areas with heavily damaged roads have many complaints of bent wheels. Repair is usually doable, but can get costly. Consider this first when thinking about going to 17s.
I can't comment on ride harshness as I don't have my 17s on yet, but smoothness will degrade. In return, you get crisper handling.
As far as tire clearance, that is no problem unless you push it. The Viggen runs 215/45R17 stock, and so can your SE as long as the offset is correct. Some people have gone wider without problems.
Despite the reports of easily bent stock rims, I decided to go with the 17" 9-5 Aero 3-spoke wheels on my 9-3 base. These are not known to be the best quality out there, but I bought them new (takeoff) for less than what most lower cost aftermarkets run at the tirerack. Plus they look cooler, IMO.
