love the loaner

I've got a brand new 9-3 home today as a loaner whilst the dealer takes another run at the broken temp control knob in my '99 9-3.
It's an automatic, which I've never driven. Great transmission. Plenty of get-up-and-go.
My question: What specifically has the two years and 65,000 km taken out of my '99 to make the 2001 feel so much tighter, quieter and more fun to drive? Suspension? Tires? Other? Can I get that original feeling back?
Thanks.
