I have the SE but have driven the base occasionally. If you like to go very fast, the SE is worth it. If it's just a very nice daily communter, you're better off with the base.
The SE has some tramlining or bump steer that you will NOT notice in the base. This seems to be an effect of the wider lower profile tires. I deal with it because I like the extra grip on the road.
The base has a smoother ride by the way.
If you get the SE, it comes with summer tires so you'll need snow tires if you live in the snow belt.
The extra power is noticeable in the SE but the base is great too. The difference is less noticeable with a slushbox tranny.
My favorite SE features are the 16" rims, the nice wood dash, leather, and the ACC climate control. That's really why I got it but I'd be very happy with either. In the winter I threw my snowblower in the back and went to go help out a friend who was snowed in. Apparently, he couldn't get his Volvo out of the driveway! :)
Happy Saabing
Bill
