Saabs are no more expensive to maintain than any other car. It isn't that they're cheap to fix, it's that American and Japanese cars have gotten just as expensive to repair. If you keep up the maintenance, then the car should last you well over 10 years - Saabs are famous for their longevity. And the SE has free scheduled maintenance for the first 3 years anyway (or is it 4 years?). Saabs do have a depreciation problem, but then so do a lot of other makes right now - plus, since you're planning on keeping it for a while, then this shouldn't matter.
For what it's worth, Saabs have become much more reliable since GM entered the picture. My '00 Viggen has been a gem - a couple of rattles (fixed) and a loose drain tube (fixed). Nothing like my C900t, which is 11 years old and still has problems from 11 years ago (all fit and finish things, no engine work has ever been done to it).
Get the Saab - no other convertible comes close. What else are you looking at, by the way?
