Infinity Kappa Series or other aftermarket speakers will not 'blow' your head unit nor do they 'need' an amp. Speakers have different efficiency ratings, usually 85 to 92 dB. The higher the number the less power it takes to drive the speaker. Most higher end speakers have efficiencies of 85 to 89 dB. This is due to using stiffer cone material and stiffer rubber surrounds. The spakers require a bit more power, but do not distort as easily as, say, paper cones with foam surrounds. So with Infinity Kappas (efficiency of 89 dB) you may need to turn the volume up to get the same sound level you are used to. If you like your music really loud, you may start to hit the limit of the head unit which will cause distortion or clipping. Running the head unit with severe distortion or clipping levels will probably hurt the head unit, but your ears will be bloodied by the nasty sound long before that happens. By the way, be sure to use bass blockers (or the Infinity Kappa included 100 micro-farad capacitor) for the dash speakers to prevent any damage to the speaker. The 3.5 inch speakers just can't take harsh bass notes or clipping.
I found the stock Audio System 3 in my 1998 900SET 5-door to have very poor frequency response. The mid-bass was muddy, the mid-range was lacking, and the high frequencies were buzzy. The NG900 SET stereo system (Audio System 3) has two 3.5 diameter dual cone dash speakers and two 6x 9 dual cone rear speakers (6.5 diameter rear speakers in convertibles) driven by the radio tuner/amplifier (20W Max. X 4). There are also two 6.5 diameter front door speakers driven by a separate mid-bass amplifier, handling only the frequencies below 200 HZ (40W Max. X 2). The stock speakers were of cheap paper and plastic construction and did not include separate tweeter elements.
I upgraded the sound system by installing Infinity Kappa series aftermarket speakers. I kept the stock radio tuner/amplifier unit and the stock mid-bass amplifier. I simply replaced the stock speakers with the Infinity Kappa speakers (Infinity Kappa 32.1cf 3.5 2-way speakers in the dash, Infinity Kappa 693.1i 6x 9 3-way speakers in the rear parcel shelf, and Infinity Kappa 65.1mb 6.5 mid-bass speakers in the front doors). The Infinity Kappa speakers give much fuller response in the mid-bass and mid-range frequencies and clear definition in the high frequencies.
