Depending on your needs, I would sugguest the following (based on the comments of other people in the Seattle area running these tires):
Dry/Wet Performance tires -
Bridgestone Potenza RE730 or Kumho Ecsta Supra 712; both available in 205/50-16 or 205/55-16.
All-Season Performance tires -
Dunlop SP Sport 5000, BF Goodrich g-force T/A KDWS, Yokohama AVS dB; all available in 205/55-16 size.
Pirelli P7000 Supersport; available in 205/50-16 or 205/55-16.
I am currently using Yokohama AVS S4-z all-season tires in 205/55-16 size on my 1998 900SET. I will be replacing them with either the BF Goodrich g-force T/A KDWS or Yokohama AVS dB in 205/55-16 this fall. I found that the 205/55-16 size fits just fine with minimal loss of performance, and a bit more 'pothole' protection. The speedometer error is about 3% (the speedo reads 3% slower than the actual speed).
It is always a judgement call here in Seattle whether the benefits of an all-season tire for the occasional snow and winter mountain pass driving makes up for the loss of absolute tire performance. Since I travel to Whistler and the east side of the mountains several times during the winter, I have opted for the all-season tires (and not need to use chains yet).
