Help me pick - SE or Base

I've have been looking at the 9-3 for a while and am about to take the leap. I am having a hard time deciding between the SE and a fully loaded base model. As far as the engine… I have driven both and don’t see that much of a difference with the extra horses, but as someone once told me, more is always better. The power seats are also ok, but don’t thrill me that much. I really don’t like the wood dash much, I prefer the carbon fiber. I like the automatic climate control. The one item I really like with the SE is the extra body panels. They are called Body-colored bumper skirts and side skirts in the brochure. In my opinion, this option completes the eccentric look of the automobile.
I asked the dealer I was working with if I could get these added to a base. He said the cost would put the base model around the same price as the SE. We currently are talking about a 3-thousand dollar difference. I can’t see these costing that much.
My questions for you are… Has anyone gotten this done? What should I expect to pay? Would I look like a hack driving an SE want-to-be?
I appreciate your help, and have enjoyed reading your comments over the last few months.
As a side note… I also looked at the VW Passat and Volvo S40 before deciding on the Saab 9-3.
Thanks,
David
