Basically what happens is that there is a knock sensor on the engine. When it senses a knock it adjusts the timing. When you start to see engine knock is in marginal conditions, hard acceleration, on an incline, higher altitude, hot temperature. I buy fuel for the type of driving I plan on doing. If I plan on a long trip with normal speed I put in 87 octane. If I want to play around, I put in 92 octane. If I plan to drive in the mountains then ether 92 or 89. Just adding a higher octane fuel in NO way improves fuel economy it only allows you to get the full power from the engine. If you do not need full power then you are just blowing money out the tail pipe!
