It was the WRX Wagon. The WRX brochure I picked up in the dealer listed
the "gauge cluster" with boost, volts and temp? as optional. It goes
where the digital clock typically sits on a Japanese car: top & center of
dash. My thought about no turbo gauge on a turbo car was the same thought
I had when I had a 2 5-speed Dodges without tach gauges: CHEAP.
I did hear the turbo whine a bit, the same sound I love to hear with my
Saab's windows down and sunroof open. But when I hear that sound the
car takes off. The WRX just didn't deliver the same.
When I was going to buy a new car, I first tried a Volvo based on
experience with a rental S90 a few years back. Since I was about
to get married, I figured I'd let me wife-to-be drive all the cars first
as she'd have to live with the car, too. Plus, I'm the more impulsive
one, her level head helps on big ticket items. Bottom line, she hated
the Volvo. WAY too sluggish. We tried Saab for no real good reason.
I guess we liked the way they looked, and she decided a hatchback
would be good. About 2 seconds into that test drive she had a HUGE
smile on her face. Same for me. That's the new standard. The car
has to be a blast to drive. I don't want to have to "work it" to make
it fun to drive. You just know.
A Miata, while not the fastest thing going, is still a blast to drive.
It handles like a champ, and is a lot of fun with the top down on a
summer day. Unfortunately it is too small and no way in hell I'd drive
it in the Cleveland winter. What's worse, a light rear wheel drive car
or the idiots in their Canyonero SUV's talking on cell phones thinking
they can drive 80 on snow and ice? So Miata's out for a year 'round car.
WRX is out. It's just not fun.
Anybody here like the A4? I'm going to try one this week, I think.
I'm also going to start looking for a classic 900 ragtop. I still
hestiate to have 2 Saabs in our DINK driveway. It would be just a
but yuppie, right?
