Jeff:
I can't personally vouch for any of the following, but it does address your questions.
The Jan. 30, 2001 issue of Auto World Weekly (p. 7), shows a "spy photo" of the new 9-3 and says it'll be longer and wider than the current 9-3 and bear a strong resemblance to the current 9-5. "Power will come from the radically new Saab variable-compression 1.6 liter engine, producing 225 hp."
The June, 2001 issue of Automobile magazine (p. 66) shows an undisguised photo of the new 9-3 (comfirming that it really does look pretty much like the current 9-5, at least on the outside) and says it'll be built on GM's Epsilon platform and will feature a state-of-the-art independent rear suspension and a revised MacPherson strut arrangement in front. According to Automobile, the new 9-3 will be offered in four different body styles: 3-door hatchback; four-door sedan; two-door convertible; and a five-door wagon. "There might even be a crossover vehicle based on the wagon, called the Trekker." They say Saab will unveil the new 9-3 in late 2002.
Cheers and hope this helps.
