The Viggen is not a car for everyone--thankfully. I dive mine every day and I enjoy it immensely but it definitely takes an enthusiast to enjoy its virtues (and overlook its shortcomings). I think that overall the article's author did a respectable job and presented facts with reasonable accuracy. The article is not intended for an enthusiast audience and the choice of competitve vehicles shows this.
But I cannot overlook the fact that I am driving a $38,000 car that I truly do not believe is worth anywhere near that amount of money. I was lucky enough to get mine at a very substantial discount at the end of 1999. The price I paid was $31,247--which I believe is much more in line with the actual value of the vehicle.
I love my car because it makes me smile almost every day. My wife would MUCH rather drive her 9-5 SE and cannot see the virtues of the Viggen. That's fine with me.
If the author prefers other cars, then so be it. Even I would be very hard pressed to recommend a Viggen to someone at full MSRP. The fact that they can be found at a discount is an indication that most potential buyers agree that it is overpriced. Heck, SaabUSA had a VERY difficult time moving them in 1999 and they only brought 400 into the country.
I'll continue to enjoy my car but am not about to berate someone for having a different opinion. I drive a car that fits my lifestyle and driving style quite nicely, thank you very much. Maybe Saab would move more of them if they offered an automatic transmission but that would obviously go against the nature of the beast and I applaud Saab for not transforming the performer into a poseur.
To each his own.
