All O2 sensors operate the same, on any spark ignition engine.
The O2 sensor has a ceramic and platinum element that gets heated in the exhaust stream. The case of the sensor is vented to astmosphere. Any difference in O2 between the exhaust stream and atmosphere will develop a small voltage. The ECU monitors the voltage to deteminte the O2 levels in the exhaust stream. The original O2 sensors had 1 wire, and the sensor's electrical ground was through the exhaust system (and turbo). The modern sensors still ground through the exhaust, but have two added wires. These power a heater to get the sensor to operating temperatues faster, which allows for less cold start polution. The 3 wire O2 sensors last a very long time.
The levels of O2 in the exhaust stream have to be just right to allow the two stage catalytic converter to work. The first stage will convert N0x, nitrous oxides, to N2 and O2, the second stage then uses the liberated O2 to reduce CO to CO2.
Many systems now have two O2 sensors, the second one is after the catalytic converter. I do not know if that serves a purpose in terms of fine tuning the fuel air ratio or if it is simply there to develop a fault code if the cat does not seem to be working.
