I reset for every trip, and I do it when out of city traffic for my commutes. This removes the cold engine warmup and city driving variables. This does not provide an end to end mpg number, but allows me to monitor changes.
If traffic is heavier, a bit slower and flowing well, you mpg's will go up with the slower speeds. Winds can make a huge difference, just like road speed. Side winds are not neutral, and can take a big bite out of your mpgs.
For a number of reasons, hot humid weather should reduce your power, but increase your mpg's. I think that the Trionic ECU is proactive in high temperatures and it does not wait for signs of trouble with knocking conditions, but it just goes into retarded ignition timing and the mpg's fall as a result. That is my suspicion.
The ECU does not have a temperature sensor for fuel, and the O2 sensr and closed loop control will compensate for hot fuel. But perhaps the ECU's mpg calculations do not make any compensation and the reading may be inacurate and low at high temperatures. I have not tried to verify this will tank fill calculations.
My long distance mpg's for 400 to 500 miles on a tank have the SID readling low by .4%. That is very good.
What can you do about it? Cold air induction. You get that from the factory, or with a proper air box mod. But, you can also insulate the intake system and get some noticeable improvements in highway miles and power. This will help when temperatures go into the 90's and higher.
