I buy Amsoil series 2000 in one gallon jugs (equivalent to 4 quarts). I also change my own oil and filter.
Here's the procedure:
Take off oil filler cap and set aside. Loosen old oil filter and let bulk of oil drain out before completely removing. Unscrew drain plug and let old oil drain out (replace copper washer if necessary). Inspect old oil filter to make sure rubber sealing gasket is on the filter and not on the engine block. Wipe down the oil filter mounting area with a clean rag.
After all the dirty oil has drained out, take new oil filter and using clean oil lubricate the rubber oil ring thats on the filter. Thread the filter on and hand tighten only. Install the drain plug and DON'T overtighten. Put in 4 quarts into the crankcase, start engine and let run for 20-30 seconds to circulate the oil (don't rev the engine !). Shut off engine and wait 1-2 minutes for oil to drain back into the oil pan. Check oil level and top off to the full mark.
I always start the engine and let it idle and visually inspect to make sure there are no leaks.
