I'll start by saying you have given a very detailed explanation of the fault. If those words make it through your service advisor to the technician, the problem should be very easy to diagnose. The most likely fault is a broken reverse gear lockout. The lockout prevents the shifter from going over too far. If it's broken, the shifter will drift over into the reverse gear range and cause the exact problem you mention. The lockout is a plastic tab located inside the car at the shifter housing.
