I got my 01 SE (w/ auto) in early May. For the first couple weeks, I did get 16-17 MPG and it disturbed me because I traded my Jeep Gr. Cherokee for a Saab to cut down on fuel costs among other things..but I read the manual and it says the fuel economy gradually picks up. 5K miles is the target to get the car running smoothly etc and achieve the 20/28 MPG.
Then in late July, I drove from San Jose to Arizona and got 33 MPG highway (with cruise control, etc..) Now after clearing the SID, I get 20 MPG for city driving.
Hope this helps. Keep driving the car.
