Hello:
Okay, I need advice. I am very close to buying a set of 17" Aero wheels for my 2000 Saab 9-3 3dr because the price is so good. I never thought I could afford them. I have the 15" wheels that came with the car and always wanted to get the 16" vikings, but their cost new is prohibitive, and they're hard to find used in good shape. I love the 17" Aero alloys much better, but was concerned about the following items:
1. My car is base, do I need to be concerned about not having the proper suspension set up for an upgrade to 17"? (I'm not worried about 16")
2. Ride and handling (related to above). I can deal with a firm ride, and will love the crisper turn-in. I am not a autcrosser, and do a fair amount of city driving. Are the 17" wheels (with standard tire - assuming 215/45/17) are 75% increase in firmness? 50%, 25%?
3. Cost - I figure I'll need to spend 400-500 for the wheels in top shape. I expect to pay $700-$900 for quality tires. This could be as much as $1400. I'm gonna have to buy tires in 10,000 miles anyway, so part of this expense is expected.
So, straight up. Should I buy the 17" Aeros while the price is good? Or are the compromises too much for my car and I should try and spend a similar amount of money of 16" Viking wheels and tires?
Yes, this is causing me fits. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!
David
