Hi -

I'm hoping for a little advice or validation.

The history: I bought a 1999 9-3 base in July, with approx 60,000 miles (high miles but great price). I've had no issues whatsoever except for:

3 weeks ago, I start getting the "check gas cap" message on my SID when I would be running out at 120 km/hr for a while and then exit and come down to sedate driving. The sedate driving (or parking at my mailbox) seemed to trigger it, and being familiar with the messages on the subject here, I cleared the message and intended to fill up my near empty tank. I didn't fill up fast enough, and my "Check Engine" light came on. I filled up, drove for a week hoping it would reset, and then had a dealer check the codes and reset them (only gas cap code was showing).

It happened a second time, at about 1/2 a tank, and after flashing the SID warning twice, went to "Check engine". I had the code verified and cleared about 10 days later (car still running fine, same gas mileage etc.).

This week it happened while the tank was 3/4 full, and Saab service says the only code is the check cap one. I'm seeing a trend I don't like here, so asked them to propose a resolution. They did some tests and proposed a change of the Purge Solenoid (PN 1-30551133). The proposed cost is $146 + 3/4 hour (Canadian dollars).

Is this a reasonable stab at solving my problem? Was there ever a recall on this part for 1999 9-3?

TIA for any advice - Graham.

p.s. I really do love this car, and though my page is listed in links I'll troll for comments on my pictures
