My preference for modest winter type weather (NE Ohio, but *not* in the snow belt) is 195-60-15, the tire with the equivalent load rating and OD as the standard tire, but a bit narrower. I'd also recommend any of the H-rated winter tires (such as the Nokian NRW or a Michelin Pilot Alpin) to make the most of the dry and wet pavement which you will see most of the time.
If your weather is more severe, then notch down to 185-65-15 - again, a narrower tire having the same OD and load rating, and a more aggressive tread, (such as a Nokian Hakka 1, Hakka "Q", or your referenced Michelin Alpin).
If you live just on the edge of where winter happens or spend about all your time in flat urban environments, you could even get by with 205-55-15 all season tires for the winter! There's no "one size fits all", it's all dependent on your local climate.
